DIY Christmas crochet hat

I know it sounds a bit early but it really isn’t if you have 3 kids and want to make DIY Christmas hats as gifts. I also love to work with something special, something with a bit of sparkle. Today as part of the #CreativeChristmas series on Remodelaholic I am posting a free crochet pattern for a super cool slouchy Christmas hat.  Be sure to check out their week-long link party for any and all Christmas projects here

DIY Christmas crochet hat

When I saw this lovely soft white yarn I knew what I wanted to do, I wanted to make a lovely hat with a cute pompom, well an amigurumi pompom.

I explained how to make this hat for a child but you can adapt the pattern for any head size very easily.

Please note, the pattern is written in American standard terms.

Skill level: Easy / Beginner

Size: One size

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

sc2tog = single crochet 2 together, decreasing your stitch count by 1 st

sl st = slip stitch

Materials and notions:

1 ball of Julia Knitters, If you cannot find this yarn have a look at all this lovely chunky yarn
 Crochet hooks size L (8 mm) for the hat and J (6mm) for the pompom

Toy Stuffing for the pompom

Tapestry needle or yarn needle

Gauge: 5 hdc and 5 rows = 2 inches

With the white yarn and and the L hook, ch 32.

Row 1: make 1hdc on each ch, ch2 and turn (counts as the first st of next row)

Row 2: working only on the back loops of the st make 1hdc on each st.

Repeat row 2 until you have 9 inches (23 cm) of fabric made, change to the silver colour and make two rows in silver, two rows in white and another two rows in silver now continue with the white until you have enough fabric to go around the head, in my hat another 5 inches (12.5 cm).

Cut the yarn and sew both ends of the fabric together to make a tube. Sew one end of the hat close and fold the border and sew it in place.

Pattern note: the amigurumi pompom is made as a continuous round, at the end of each round simply make place a marker and carry on, (do not join in)

With the J hook and the silver yarn ch2

Round 1:  on the second ch from the hook make 6sc

Round 2: make 2sc in each st (12 sts)

Round 3: make 2sc in the first st, 1sc in the next (18 sts)

Round 4: make 2sc in the next st, 1sc in each of the next 2sts (24 sts)

Round 5: make 2sc in the next st, 1sc in each of the next 3sts (30 sts)

Rounds 6 to 11: make 1sc in each st (30 sts)

Round 12: sc2tog, 1sc in each of the next 3sts (24 sts)

Round 13: sc2tog, 1sc in each of the next 2sts (18 sts)

Round 14: sc2tog, 1sc in the next st (12 sts)

Now fill your pompom with the stuffing

Round 15: sc2tog all around (6sts)

Round 16: sc2tog all around (3sts),cut the yarn and with the yarn needle close the whole with the tail.

You now simply attach your pompom to your hat and that is it!
